Performance Solutions
While we here at Waterproofing Integrity aim to assist you in achieving compliant outcomes, we acknowledge that may not always be possible. Each site and project can be different and should take a bespoke approach to design based on the site conditions and intended use.
What is a Performance Solution?
The National Construction Code outlines the requirements in building compliance and captures a range of Australian Standards including those attributed to waterproofing. Those Standards are:
- AS37430
- AS4654.2
- AS4858
- AS 4654.1
These Standards are all applied under Volume 1 of the NCC and apply to commercial construction in Classes 2-9. For domestic homes, Class 1 and Class 10a, Volume 2 of the NCC applies which outlines similar but occasionally slightly different requirements. The above Standards can apply in Class 1 when nominated however.

A Performance Solution comes into consideration when the deemed-to-satisfy requirements of the NCC cannot be met. What Waterproofing Integrity are willing to consider however, is whether what is intended to be constructed or what has been constructed meets the performance requirements of the NCC. In other words, although it does not meet the code, can it be assessed and supported that the design and or construction works as what the NCC is intending?

What do I need for a Performance Solution to be signed off?
As per NCC requirements, you will need sign off from interested parties to the project. So your Certifier or Building Surveyor needs to be both willing to accept a Performance Solution and able to do so under their licence, with some Class 1 professionals unable to accept Performance Solutions. Otherwise, the architect, builder, asset owner and other relevant stakeholders need to accept that the proposed solution is suitable.

Depending on the nature of the works, there may be the need for a number of key design considerations to adhere to in order for the Performance Solution to be effective.

What are common Performance Solutions for Waterproofing?
Short of listing a number of ways you can avoid being compliant with the NCC, we understand that there are a range of considerations in achieving building design and construction. Some could be architectural intentions, limitations of working on existing buildings or updates to the NCC that add further consideration to being able to achieve deemed-to-satisfy requirements.
Please reach out to us to discuss what your situation is and we can advise how we may be able to assist.
